Inditex: 2000
In 2000, Inditex was one of the largest specialty apparel retailers in the world, with $2.4 billion in sales from 1,080 stores across 33 countries. Analysts described the company as "innovative" and "devastating," with Zara, Inditex's main brand, able to push a product from design to display in less than two weeks. However, Inditex was still only a sixth of the size of Gap and two thirds the size of H&M. Amancio Ortega, Inditex's Chairman and founder, was committed to challenging these industry leaders and had announced an IPO to raise more capital toward this goal. Ortega was also searching for a CEO to replace Jos Maria Castellano. How would Inditex's IPO affect its ability to attract top management and to challenge Gap and H&M? How could Inditex best position itself for growth in the new millennium?
