One Acre Fund's mission was to provide farmers with the skills and inputs they needed to grow their own way out of poverty, and after eight years of operation, the organization had helped raise the incomes and crop yields of poor farmers throughout East Africa, where it served over 175,000 farming families. To achieve the goal of 1,000,000 enrolled farm families by 2020, the organization's executive director, Andrew Youn, knew it would only be possible with the strong army of field officers and the hundreds of other staff members who made up the heart and soul of the organization. But scaling so monumentally while striving to hire, retain, and develop the very best people would require tremendous work and a meticulous strategy. Youn and his team needed to define a path for scaling its "people operations" (One Acre Fund's internal brand for human resources) that was clear enough to provide solid guidance, while being creative and flexible enough to ensure that the organization could nimbly respond to both the opportunities and obstacles that would inevitably come its way.
