An error has been discovered in a clinical trial undertaken at CISM, a Mozambican health research center focused on endemic diseases and their treatment. In recent years, CISM has carried out sophisticated clinical trials for promising drugs and vaccines against malaria and other illnesses with high incidence in Sub-Saharan Africa. Were errors such as the one in the clinical study a one-off human slip or were there systemic flaws in their processes? What needed to be done to ensure that events like this would not happen again? CISM has also recently started the process of becoming more independent from its Barcelona partner institution, leading to the following questions: How can CISM stay at the forefront of biomedical research in Africa while at the same time serving national objectives? How can it ensure sustainable financing with reductions in the contributions from the Spanish government? How can it retain and motivate its excellent national researchers and attract new ones?
