Special Electronics, Inc. (SEI) had reason to be proud of its results for 2000 and 2001. Sales and income were at an all-time high. And, in mid-2001, the company had been awarded a large, multiyear government contract. The contract called for deliveries of $8 million in 2001, $32 million in 2002, and $44 million in 2003. The potential revenue from the contract was clearly material, and, perhaps of equal importance, winning the contract was considered a demonstration of the company's maturity.
